Types Of Mass Media Term Paper Help

There are several different ways of classifying messmate. We might list them according to their respective functions:- the informational media, the entertainment media and the persuasive media. We might also list them according to various technologies utilized by these media, e.g., the print media; the electronic media, or we might treat each one of them individually: newspapers, magazines, books, radio, TV, etc.

In this chapter, we shall briefly discuss these forms of the mass media

Print Journalism
Newspaper

A newspaper historically has been a geographically limited, regularly published print medium, ‘serving the general Interests of a specific community. However, some new national papers are causing a revision of that definition

The history of the press can be divided into eight eras: (1) the colonial press, (2) the Revolutionary press, (3) the political press, (4) the penny press, (5) the personal editors’ press, (6)yellow journalism, (7) jazz journalism, and (8) the present age- of
consolidation.

The person who runs the paper is the publisher. Most newspapers are divided into five departments: editorial, advertising, production, circulation, and administration. The news people–reporters and editors, wire services, stringers, and correspondents-feed material to newsrooms that print only about 10 percent of what is available

interests, rather than a homogeneous mass population, some publishers redesigned their papers to attract these groups. Their idea was that while all readers share an interst in general news developments, each audience segment desires something more from the newspaper. Demographic information gathered through market research identified groups by income, age, residential area, and type of background. To please them, these newspapers now produce enlarged special sections, usually weekly, focused on a field of interest such as entertainment, sports, contemporary living styles, and finance. Sections covering specific topics··sports cars or camping, for example-are included at intervals. Some papers produce sections of localized news for specific neighborhoods. Using computerized circulation lists, newspapers have experimented with delivering special sections only to those readers who desire them.

Critics have argued that at times newspapers have gone too far in this change of direction, becoming soft in content and neglecting the hard news that traditionally is the primary function of a daily newspaper. They have urged, instead, greater attention to accuracy and thoroughness of basic news coverage. Editors were doing a better job of producing newspapers with appeal to all ages and interest groups, but still had much to learn about what the public wants

Some newspapers have leased cable TV channels and presented news programmers, as well as classified advertising. These programmers, however, supplement the daily newspaper rather than replace it. The content of certain major newspapers is available to operators of computers through numerous commercial databases. By using a telephone hookup, the operator can summon news reports onto the computer screen, along with a vast amount of specialized information not usually included in newspapers. The popularity of personal computers has stimulated use of databases
